STRUCTURAL STRENGTHENING
Structural Strengthening Services for Commercial & Infrastructure Projects
Engineered solutions to restore capacity, improve performance, and extend the service life of existing structures across British Columbia and Canada.
Structural problems don't fix themselves
Deteriorating concrete that looks like a surface issue is often a sign of active rebar corrosion underneath.
Columns that passed inspection a decade ago are now carrying loads they weren't designed for.
A repair that treated the symptom rather than the cause failed again—and now the scope has doubled.
An aging structure that needs a tenant improvement or occupancy change suddenly has a code compliance gap no one budgeted for.
These aren't just structural problems. They're liability, timeline, and budget problems. And they need a contractor who starts with the right diagnosis, not the nearest fix.

Extend the Life of Your Structure with Confidence
Structural strengthening is often the most cost-effective way to restore performance and extend the life of an asset without full reconstruction.
Whether you are dealing with aging infrastructure, increased load demands, or code compliance issues, we provide engineered solutions that ensure safety, performance, and longevity.

Structural Strengthening Solutions
We provide a full range of structural reinforcement and retrofitting methods tailored to each project’s requirements.
Buildings that no longer meet code or can't support occupancy changes
Regulatory pressure, occupancy changes, and updated seismic requirements create compliance gaps that Retro closes through engineered retrofitting rather than full replacement..
Structural connections or load paths that are failing or incomplete
Advanced anchoring and reinforcement solutions for retrofit applications.
Concrete elements losing capacity or showing signs of deterioration
High-performance CFRP systems are used to increase flexural, shear, and axial capacity in concrete structures without adding significant weight.
Structures carrying loads beyond their original design capacity
Structural steel elements are bonded or mechanically fixed to existing structures to improve load-bearing performance.
Aging structures that need increased capacity or stiffness
Traditional strengthening method used to increase structural capacity and stiffness.
CASE STUDY EXAMPLE
Structural strengthening in an occupied parkade, completed on schedule
A multi-level parkade showing active concrete deterioration and load capacity concerns required full structural strengthening while remaining open to daily vehicle traffic.
Retro completed a detailed structural assessment, specified the appropriate CFRP and post-installed reinforcement systems, and executed the full scope without disrupting building occupants.

Industries we serve
Retro delivers structural strengthening across commercial, industrial, and infrastructure sectors throughout British Columbia and Canada.
Parking structures
Where corrosion, load demand, and long-term deterioration are constant pressures, Retro strengthens slabs, columns, and structural elements to restore capacity and extend service life.
Commercial Buildings
From tenant improvement upgrades to code compliance retrofits, Retro handles the structural side of what your building needs to do next.
Industrial Facilities
Heavy loads, operational constraints, and demanding site conditions are standard on industrial projects. Retro executes structural strengthening without shutting down your operations.
Infrastructure and Transportation
Retro brings the same engineering-led approach to bridges, traffic decks, and municipal infrastructure where structural performance and public safety are non-negotiable.
Why Choose Retro for Your Restoration Project
Retro was built for the repairs that require more than a crew and a product — the complex scopes, the active sites, the structures where getting it wrong has real consequences.
For 36 years we've worked alongside engineers, property managers, and developers who needed a contractor they could trust to diagnose accurately, execute cleanly, and stand behind the result.
Our work is spec-driven because the people we work with require it, and our approach is diagnostic-first because BC's structures demand it.
When the problem is complex and the margin for error is low, Retro is the contractor BC's most demanding projects call.

36+ Years of Local Resillience
Retro has been restoring BC structures since the late 1980s. Decades of experience means faster diagnosis, fewer surprises, and specs built for BC's climate and conditions.
9,455+ Restoration Projects Completed
In specialty contracting, experience is the ultimate risk-mitigator. If it’s a concrete or structural challenge, we’ve seen it, solved it, and warrantied it.
Surgical Accuracy, Zero Disruption
We specialize in high-traffic, live environments (stadiums, transit, occupied residential). We plan meticulously so your operations never stop.

Questions We Hear Before Every Project Starts
Structural strengthening improves the load-carrying capacity of existing structures using engineered reinforcement - CFRP, steel plating, or concrete enlargement. It's needed when a structure shows deterioration, is under-designed for current loads, or must meet updated building or seismic codes.
When properly designed and installed, CFRP and steel strengthening systems can extend the service life of a structure by several decades. Material selection and surface preparation are critical - we don't cut corners on either.
Yes. It's one of the things we specialize in. We phase and sequence the work around your occupancy, operations, and schedule. Most of our structural strengthening projects are completed in active buildings with no operational shutdowns required.
Retro uses containment systems, negative air pressure where required, and phased work windows to keep active areas of the building unaffected. The containment plan is developed before work begins and coordinated with your facility or property management team.
In most cases, no. Retro's project sequencing is built around keeping occupants in place. Where temporary access restrictions are unavoidable, we plan and communicate those windows in advance.
All Retro sites are managed to WorkSafeBC standards with hoarding, signage, and access control appropriate to the building type.
In most cases, yes. Strengthening avoids demolition, reduces material costs, and significantly cuts programme time. For occupied buildings, it also eliminates the cost and disruption of relocation during a full rebuild.
Retro works in coordination with structural engineers on every strengthening project. If you have an engineer of record already engaged, we work directly with them. If you don't, we can help connect you with the right people before the assessment begins.
Project duration depends heavily on scope, site access, and occupancy constraints. Retro provides a detailed project timeline as part of the scoping process so you know what to expect before work begins.
When Retro encounters unexpected conditions, we document the findings, communicate immediately with the engineer of record and the client, and present a clear scope adjustment before proceeding. Nothing changes without your knowledge and sign-off.
The first step is a site consultation. Retro's team reviews existing documentation, assesses site conditions, and develops a clear picture of what the structure needs before any scope is recommended.
