Concrete scaling is one of the earliest visible signs that a concrete surface is beginning to deteriorate. While it often starts as minor surface flaking, untreated scaling can allow moisture and de-icing salts to penetrate deeper into the concrete, accelerating deterioration and increasing future repair costs. 

What is Concrete Scaling? 

Scaling is the loss of the concrete surface, where thin flakes or layers begin to peel away. It most commonly affects exposed concrete surfaces such as parkade slabs, ramps, sidewalks, balconies, loading docks, and exterior stairs. 

In its early stages, scaling may appear cosmetic. Over time, however, it can expose the concrete to further moisture intrusion, freeze-thaw damage, and reinforcement corrosion. 

What Causes Scaling? 

Scaling typically develops due to one or more of the following factors: 

  • Repeated freeze-thaw cycles 
  • De-icing salts penetrating the concrete surface 
  • Poor finishing practices during concrete placement 
  • Inadequate air entrainment within the concrete mix 
  • Improper curing after placement 
  • Long-term weather exposure 

In many cases, multiple factors contribute to the deterioration. 

Why Does it Matter? 

Although scaling often begins at the surface, it should not be ignored. 

As the protective concrete cover deteriorates, moisture and chlorides can penetrate deeper into the slab. Over time, this increases the risk of: 

  • Reinforcing steel corrosion 
  • Surface delamination 
  • Concrete spalling 
  • Reduced service life 
  • Higher repair costs if left untreated 

Early intervention is often significantly more cost-effective than extensive restoration after deterioration has progressed. 

How is Scaling Repaired? 

The appropriate repair method depends on the severity and underlying cause of the damage. 

Typical repair approaches may include: 

  • Surface preparation and localized concrete repairs

  • Protective coatings or sealers 
  • Waterproofing systems where appropriate
